Darya Shipilova, a 28‑year‑old technician at the Irkutsk Anti‑Plague Research Institute, died on Friday from pneumonia of an as‑yet unestablished origin, sparking fears that she might have contracted pneumonic plague.

Russian public‑health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor immediately launched a comprehensive anti‑epidemic response. It identified a wide circle of people who had been in contact with Shipilova and placed about 200 of them under medical observation in a local hospital.

Rospotrebnadzor said extensive testing found no plague‑linked microorganisms in Shipilova’s body and no infectious diseases among institute staff in the past ten days.

Testing of the quarantined contacts revealed two COVID‑19 cases and two rhinovirus infections, but no plague pathogens. None of the contacts showed any health changes linked to an infectious disease.

Around 60 % of those under quarantine were later released, and the hospital soon resumed normal diagnostic work.

The World Health Organization reported that Russian authorities told it no plague cases had been detected among anyone who had been in contact with the technician. The WHO also requested further information from Russia about the pneumonia‑causing pathogen.

This coordinated effort shows how national health agencies and the WHO work together: they quickly isolate possible exposures, run extensive laboratory tests, share findings, and keep the international community informed.
