The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced that Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai are this year’s Nobel laureates in Chemistry.
They received the award for discovering non‑linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis, a finding that changes how chemists steer reactions toward a single molecular mirror image.
Heiner Linke, chair of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry, said the duo “has provided a solution to a chemical mystery that is over a century old: how homochirality can emerge spontaneously.”
Chirality means a molecule exists in two forms that are mirror images, much like left and right hands. In many biological systems only one form is useful, so drug makers must produce the correct version to ensure safety and effectiveness.
Kagan and Soai showed that certain reactions can amplify a tiny initial imbalance, making the process self‑reinforcing. This autocatalytic behaviour explains how a uniform handedness could arise without external direction.
The experiment that demonstrated this effect is known as the “Soai reaction,” a name that comes directly from the original laboratory work.
Because pharmaceutical synthesis often relies on creating a single chiral form, the ability to control reactions through non‑linear and autocatalytic mechanisms is decisive for designing new medicines.
