How a Forgotten Floppy‑Disk Ad Became the Title of The Avalanches’ ‘No Bad Memories’

The Avalanches’ third studio effort arrives under the evocative banner No Bad Memories, a title that already hints at the group’s long‑standing fascination with reclaimed soundscapes.
The album’s name is a direct sample from a 1980s television spot promoting floppy disks—a storage medium most listeners under thirty have never seen.
"It's spruiking the quality of their data storage," says Chater. "Really clever [and] funny. It was a working title [but] began to take on another meaning." The trio deliberately chose the snippet because its earnest sales pitch acquires an ironic, almost poetic resonance when repurposed as a record title.
Now a trio – co‑founders Robbie Chater, Tony Di Blasi and newcomer Andy Szekeres – they find inspiration in the past on new album No Bad Memories, mining sounds from outdated technology and advertising and their ability to trigger emotional impact. "It's a special power," says Szekeres. "A sound that can instantly take millions of people back to this intense feeling of emotion that's separate from the product."
By weaponising these forgotten jingles and the mechanical clatter of legacy devices, The Avalanches demonstrate how nostalgia can be engineered, not merely recalled, turning a mundane ad into a conduit for collective memory and fresh artistic expression.
