Malaysia scored 82.9 out of 100 in the 2026 Digital Nomad Visa Index, the highest score for any Asian country. This makes it an interesting option for digital nomads looking for an affordable, English‑friendly base.
To get Malaysia’s digital nomad visa, applicants must earn at least $2,000 each month. Passportivity called Malaysia “the most practical option” among the top five destinations because of its affordability, good internet and English‑speaking environment.
In 2025, Malaysia welcomed about 42 million international visitors, the most in Southeast Asia. The index judged destinations by income requirements, cost of living, internet availability, safety and English proficiency.
Because of the low income rule, cheap living costs, reliable internet and English use, Malaysia is a practical and cost‑effective base for digital nomads in Southeast Asia. Remote workers can enjoy a well‑connected city while keeping expenses low.
