How Women’s Teaching Keeps Highland Traditions Alive and Communities Strong

Giữ lửa văn hóa cao nguyên: Khi phụ nữ truyền nghề cho thế hệ sau

In Da Nang’s highland villages, ethnic minority women are teaching weaving, dance, and crafts to younger people. Their dedication keeps cultural heritage alive and helps bind the community together.

Kring Thi Viet, 64, has spent most of her life at a loom weaving traditional Ve brocade textiles. She offers free lessons to anyone interested, teaches her children and grandchildren each step, and invites family members to gather around the loom whenever they have spare time. Her work preserves traditional clothing, brocade patterns and strengthens inter‑generational ties.

Ho Thi Ha, 67, devotes her time to the Ca Dong traditions of dance, gong playing, garment making, beadwork and jewelry. In 1999 she helped establish the Tra Va Gong Ensemble, a group that formally teaches dances, songs and gong performances to younger villagers. She also encourages improvements in agriculture, education and economic prospects while maintaining the community’s cultural identity.

Le Thi Hong Nhien, 58, protects Gie Trieng heritage by playing gongs, performing xoang dances and teaching crafts such as brocade weaving and stone‑instrument music. In 2019 she helped create the Gie Trieng Folk Performance Group and Gong Ensemble to formalize cultural transmission. Her efforts were recognised nationally when, in April 2026, she was selected as one of three representatives from Da Nang to attend a national conference in Hanoi, where she met General Secretary To Lam. Nhien links cultural preservation with better agricultural production, schooling and livelihood opportunities for villagers.

These women show how intergenerational teaching can preserve traditional clothing, music, dance and crafts while also boosting community cohesion and economic chances. Their free lessons and organized groups demonstrate that cultural heritage and improved livelihoods can grow together.
