Thailand is preparing a new hotel law that could change how travelers book rooms. The draft is being discussed because it promises stronger consumer rights for anyone staying in the country.
The draft would let guests cancel a booking or end their stay if the provider does not deliver what was advertised, according to the government announcement on Sept. 29. The cabinet approved the 98‑section draft in principle, and it is now under legal review by the Council of State.
The proposal also bans unfair booking terms. It would stop operators from changing or cancelling contracts on their own, from limiting their liability for breaches, and from forcing guests to waive their rights before they book.
The new law aims to replace the current hotel act and to cover more types of lodging, such as homestays, hostels, tents, treehouses and sharing‑economy rentals. It sorts accommodation businesses into three groups, each requiring either notification, registration or a full licence depending on size and risk.
