Tay Ho Banh Cuon, a modest eatery in Ho Chi Minh City, has become a celebrated spot for Vietnam’s beloved steamed rice rolls. Its story shows how a family stall can grow into a Michelin‑noticed restaurant while keeping cultural traditions alive.
The business began in 1961 when Tran Thi Ca set up a small roadside stall beside a temple dedicated to the patriot Phan Chau Trinh. Because Phan Chau Trinh’s pen name was Tay Ho, customers started calling the stall Tay Ho Banh Cuon, a name that has remained ever since.
Today the restaurant is run by Tran Thi Thuy Loan, who was born in 1974. Loan says she has kept the original banh cuon recipe that her mother‑in‑law taught her, and she has also added new fillings such as shrimp, chicken and vegetarian options to meet different tastes.
In June 2026 the eatery earned a Bib Gourmand from the Michelin Guide, which praised its thin, tender rice rolls and affordable prices. The recognition highlights the quality of the traditional and expanded menu.
Loan greets every customer wearing a different ao dai, explaining that a beautiful, respectful dress should be part of daily work and that the ao dai, like banh cuon, represents Vietnamese heritage. Her daily habit reinforces the restaurant’s blend of food and culture, reminding diners that tradition can thrive in modern life.
