Sister Pham Thi Hoa, a 33‑year‑old Catholic nun from Ha Tĩnh, is simultaneously caring for residents at Hong Phúc Shelter and studying special education through an online programme. Her story illustrates how lifelong learning can directly improve care for people who need it most.
Hong Phúc Shelter houses 24 vulnerable individuals – children with disabilities, orphans and elderly people without family support. The small community relies on three nuns to meet their daily needs.
Each morning Sister Hoa prepares the communal meals, assists residents who cannot bathe independently, and provides personal care where needed. After the chores, she spends several hours tutoring six children who are enrolled in local primary, lower secondary and upper secondary schools. By combining caregiving with education, she helps the children keep up with their studies while reinforcing their confidence.
Motivated by the diversity of abilities she encounters, Hoa enrolled in an online special‑education programme to acquire strategies tailored to each resident’s specific requirements. She believes that theoretical knowledge can translate into practical tools for communication, behavioural support and individualized learning. Nevertheless, Hong Phúc Shelter depends largely on irregular donations, so meeting all material and therapeutic needs remains a constant challenge.
Hoa’s experience shows that continuous professional development is not a luxury but a necessity for anyone working with vulnerable populations. When caregivers expand their expertise, they can offer more compassionate, effective assistance, ultimately improving the quality of life for those they serve.
