Lonely Planet has named seven of Vietnam's best road trips for scenic adventures. These routes let travelers see amazing nature and culture, so they are worth learning about.
The Ha Giang Loop in northern Vietnam offers winding mountain roads and dramatic valleys. The route passes communities of at least ten ethnic minority groups. Lonely Planet highlights the Ma Pi Leng Pass, where limestone mountains rise above the emerald Nho Que River.
Hai Van Pass is a 20‑kilometre stretch between Da Nang and Lang Co Beach. Lonely Planet notes that the road gets 4,298 Instagram photos per mile. It became more popular after the Hai Van Tunnel opened in 2005.
The Ho Chi Minh Highway runs 1,880 kilometres and takes about two weeks to travel. Lonely Planet says it follows a historic wartime road and passes Phong Nha‑Ke Bang and Cuc Phuong national parks. The Con Dao island route is a 25‑kilometre motorbike ride with secluded beaches, a former French prison, and it is a key nesting ground for green sea turtles; the best time to visit for snorkeling is March‑May.
Lonely Planet advises international visitors to hold a valid International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention and an appropriate driving licence. With the right documents, travelers can enjoy these unforgettable scenic adventures.
