The Ministry of Construction has approved an upgrade of the Pac Po–Cao Bang section of the Ho Chi Minh Road, covering almost 39 km. This improvement promises faster trips and new opportunities for people living along the route.
The upgraded stretch will start at the Ho Chi Minh House in Pac Po, Truong Ha commune, and end at the intersection with the former National Highway 3 in Bach Dang commune, Cao Bang province. The Ministry of Construction plans a four‑lane road with a 16 m wide roadbed and a design speed of 60 km/h. The project also includes widening seven existing bridges and building four new bridges.
The total estimated investment is nearly 3.2 trillion VND (about 124 million USD). The budget is broken down into 957 billion VND for compensation and resettlement, more than 1.8 trillion VND for construction, 16 billion VND for project management, 64 billion VND for consultancy, about 36 billion VND for other costs, and a 300 billion VND contingency. The Ministry of Construction says the project aims to ensure economic and technical efficiency, long‑term structural stability and optimal investment effectiveness.
According to the 2021‑2030 Road Network Development Plan, the Ho Chi Minh Road is a major transport artery that will be further upgraded into an expressway. The whole road is planned to be 2,600 km long and is expected to be completed next year. Upgrading the Pac Po–Cao Bang section therefore fits into a nationwide effort to improve long‑distance connectivity.
When the four‑lane upgrade is finished, traffic along the Pac Po–Cao Bang corridor should move more smoothly, potentially cutting travel time for commuters and freight. This improvement is likely to boost economic activity in the surrounding region.
